Nutrition is More than Weight Loss

What does nutrition mean to you? How important are the foods you eat?

The Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, which convenes every five years, says that the American diet is having devastating effects: about two-thirds of American adults are overweight or obese. And maybe worse, about half of American adults - about 117 million people - have preventable chronic diseases related to poor diet and physical inactivity.

This is not a new fact. We see health reports on a regular basis now about the rise of obesity in adults as well as children. We know that our foods are laden with sugar, saturated fats and sodium. The important aspect to note here is that there are preventable chronic diseases related to the foods we choose to eat. So what is your health worth to you? Why haven't we been making the healthy choices?

Nutrition is more than food. It's about lifestyle. It's about self-care. It's about making the difficult choice today so you can have the energy to play with your children in the backyard tomorrow or to avoid shooting insulin into your body or to have the mental stamina and clarity to get the secondary degree you always wanted. What we aren't attentive to is that discipline is freedom. Choosing to get your workout in instead of bottomless mimosa brunch allows you to be productive, energized and alive. Choosing to lose those extra 20 pounds could mean an improvement in your joint health so you can go on hikes with friends or improve your heart health so you can decrease your chances of a heart attack. Choosing health today means enjoying life and enjoying life longer.
